Does Accutane Cause Depression?

There is no doubting the link between depression and the use of Accutane in the treatment of acne.  The question we seek to answer in this article is whether Accutane directly contributes to the development of depression? And if so to what extent?

After a long post pubescent battle with moderate acne I finally went on a course of Roaccutane at the age of 19. I remember that prior to taking Roaccutane I was pretty depressed due to the bad state of my acne and the scars that were left all over my body.

After taking Roaccutane for about a week I started developing slight unexplained bouts of depression. This cannot in anyway be described as major or clinical depression but there was a certain sensation of generally feeling low.

I was very well read up about the side effects of Accutane and knew that depression was a possible issue so I have to say I wasn’t surprised when it did hit me. The depression wasn’t anything too overwhelming as I knew deep down inside that things had to get worse before they could get better.

The thought of being acne free with a clean scar free face gave me all the motivation I needed not to have to think about any spells of depression I experienced through my course of Accutane.

This is a very difficult topic to address as there are many social factors which can contribute to depression associated with Accutane use.

First of all most people with moderate to severe acne are likely to have low self esteem leading to diminished confidence and ultimately episodes of depression. When taking Accutane for the first four weeks at least your acne may get worse then before you started your treatment.

Now for someone who is already beaten down with depression, lacking self esteem and vital knowledge this can in very few cases be a recipe for disaster.

We have all heard of the story of the pilot who killed himself and took the passengers down with him whilst apparently taking Accutane. This type of manic depressive behaviour should not be contributed to Accutane use.

We all feel depressed at some point in our lives however that does not cause us all to take our own life and the lives of countless others. Most people like myself are well informed about the side effects of Accutane and just deal with depression in the same way they manage other side effects like dry skin or nose bleeds.

I certainly agree if you are prone to mental health issues or have a hereditary link to depression then you should probably look for an alternative path for acne treatment. In my humble opinion Accutane itself does cause slight depression without any other contributory factors.

I would add however that my depression whilst on Roaccutane could never have been as bad as the depression and anxiety I felt from suffering from years of acne. As soon as I had completed my 6 month course of Accutane my depression had completely disappeared.

My clear acne free skin gave me back my self esteem and was a major confidence booster. Accutane when used appropriately is a miracle cure for acne. Just like any other medicine you need to balance the pro’s and con’s of Accutane use. If you feel that you cannot manage not just depression but any of the side effects of Accutane then you should seek medical advice and stop taking the drug.

Although it causes me sadness to think people voluntarily took their own lives whilst on this medicine I don’t think that it justifies labelling this drug as dangerous. Let’s be honest, more people commit suicide on anti depressants than any other drug.

Accutane remains the most effective acne treatment   currently available on the market. It has been used to successfully treat over 13 million patients worldwide for over 25 years.
